Modern Applique Work – Pipili

There are many types of application found across India but it is most prominent in Odisha state. Within Odisha, the city of Puri and the town of Pipli are known for the roots, tradition and survival of appliqué art and crafts.Today, Pipli is recognised throughout the world as the hub for many craftsmen and workshops who still practise long-established techniques in the production of traditional and contemporary appliqué pieces (Pipili Chandua).
Modern applique art is a special technique by which the enhancing effect is achieved by superimposing pieces of coloured fabric in a predetermined pattern and series on the basic fabric, the edges of the patch are sewn. Usually the applique work is done by hand. Application work was limited to the Darji (tailor caste) in the old days. The designs are initially drawn on the fabric, and the patterns are then sewed. Finally the decoration would be done by embroidering.
